Letting go of the Law of Moses was hard for pharisees who had spent their lives upholding it, even after they came to believe in Jesus as Messiah. They tried to convince both Jewish and Gentile believers that they also had to follow elements of the Law. Paul, who had been a zealous pharisee himself, takes apart their arguments for relying on the Law, using the Law and logic.

Only faith/trust in God is the basis for salvation. That’s consistent through Old & New Testaments Galatians were sliding back to works as the basis for pleasing God. Even Peter & Barnabas had in Antioch. Jer 17:5-8 curses those who trust in man, blesses those who trust in God. In Galatians Paul shreds any rationale for using works as a basis for salvation. Faith in Christ, Believing God (same thing) is the ONLY basis for salvation. Christ did ALL the work and finished it. We only choose how to direct the faith that we are given by God. Our works are the result of salvation, not the source.

The new covenant is based on faith, not works. The ONLY work that is effective was done by Christ. Believers who were pharisees were trying to add one little bit of man's works, then another. Paul adamantly condemns this as a false gospel. He uses his own divine calling, history as persecutor of the church, and his own impeccable credentials as a pharisee as authority to condemn the heresy of adding to the finished work of Christ. He curses anyone who presumes to add to or take away from the Gospel of grace.

There is a brand new covenant. What it would be was stated in the Law, but the Jews could not understand it. They could not keep the one they had and could not comprehend the new one presented to them.

The salvation of mankind through Jesus' death and resurrection was always God's plan from the beginning of time. The Old Testament hints at that pretty broadly, and Jesus was explicit about it to his disciples, but it still caught everyone by surprise. It all happened exactly as the Scripture said it would.

Jesus drank the bitter dregs of the wine of God's wrath, God's hatred, toward our sins. Because of Jesus' sacrifice we have full access to a relationship with God. There is nothing we can add. We only choose to exercise the faith, that He gave us, to believe and accept the gift of that sacrifice.

Where was Jesus after he died? Jesus was the High Priest who was also the sacrificial lamb. He uniquely was able to sacrifice Himself for all sin. Because He is eternal, the forgiveness is eternal, reaching back into the past to forgive all believers of God.

The perfect sacrifice is killed, and buried to be consumed.
